STURGIS HIGH SCHOOL: 7
Seniors Cade Stanton, Jacob Gleason, Jake Allen, and Tony Schnotala made sure that their last home game was a win. Not only did they have to fight off a talented Sturgis team, but they fought the weather the whole time. The game was delayed twice due to thunder and rain. Both teams agreed in advance to play a 9 inning game to prepare for Saturday’s Districts, and Gull Lake took advantage of the extra innings. Down 5-2 going into the bottom of the 8th Gull Lake scored 6 runs to give them an 8 to 5 lead. Sturgis would fight back and collect 2 more runs in the top of the 9th but Gavin Griffin made sure that was all they would get to collect his 5th save on the season. Sturgis opened up the game when Sam Leck singled then would come around to score on an error. Gull Lake answered back with a leadoff single by Justin Mansager, followed by a Hunter Hazel double. Mansager would score when Jacob Gleason hit into a fielder’s choice. Luke Scoles followed that up with an RBI single scoring Courtesy Runner Korbin Griffin. At the end of 1, Gull Lake 2, Sturgis 1.
Sturgis would break the game open with 3 runs in the 3. Zach Chapman led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Sam Leck doubled, and Jake Abbs reached on an error, scoring Chapman and Leck. Jake Abbs would score on a Brayden Bathgate Sacrifice Fly, giving Sturgis a 4-2 lead.Sturgis would tack on another one in the 7th after a Drew Murphy RBI single, driving in Jake Abbs who singled and stole 2nd. Down 3 with only 6 outs left, Senior Cade Stanton looked to get something started and that he did. Cade led off with a double. Jacob Gleason reached base on a hit by pitch putting runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. After Luke Scoles walked to load the bases, Kole Warren singled driving in Stanton. Nick Fadden drew a bases loaded walk bringing in Gleason cutting the lead 5 to 4. Gull Lake would tie it when Luke Scoles scored on a wild pitch, moving Warren to 3rd and Fadden to 2nd. Gavin Griffin would come up with the hit of the game, driving in 2 with a double to left center. Not to be out done Justin Mansager tripled driving in Griffin to give Gull Lake an 8 to 5 lead.
Down 3 Sturgis would rally back scoring 2 runs. Parker Stevens and Sam Leck both singled and scored on a Gull Lake error. Sophomore Gavin Griffin would settle in and get back to back ground outs to end the game. Jacob Gleason ended up with the win throwing a Scoreless 8th inning. Tyler Lovelace would get the loss for Sturgis. Justin Mansager and Cade Stanton had 2 hits for Gull Lake. Luke Scoles, Hunter Hazel, Dylan Stanton, Kole Warren, and Gavin Griffin all had hits in the win. Sam Leck had 3 hits in the loss. Jake Abbs, Drew Murphy Korbin Whitcomb, and Parker Stevens also had hits.
Sturgis faces Three Rivers on Saturday in Districts while Gull Lake will go against Battle Creek Lakeview at Holt.
