LAKEVIEW HIGH SCHOOL: 2
Game 1: Gull Lake received 7 strong innings from starter Brandon Ruge and a big day at the plate from catcher Hunter Hazel to take Game 1 of the series. Ruge allowed 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 5. Hazel went 3-3 with 2 key RBI’s. Gull Lake got on the board early after singles by Hunter Hazel and Dylan Stanton put runners on 1st and 2nd. Senior Cade Stanton then singled to drive in courtesy runner Tony Schnotala. Cade Stanton would come around to score on a wild pitch giving Gull Lake a 2-0 lead. Gull Lake would add another run with two outs when Justin Mansager singled then stole 2nd base and Hunter Hazel singled driving in Mansager. Lakeview would cut into the lead in the bottom of the 2nd after back to back walks by Kollin Johnson and Jack Goodman. Both would move up on a passed ball putting runners on 2nd and 3rd. He came up with a huge 2 out single by Jacob Renkiewicz as he drove in both Johnson and Goodman. At the end of 2 Gull Lake 3, Lakeview 2. Ruge settled in and didn’t allow a runner past 2nd the rest of the game. Gull Lake picked up another run in the 3rd, and 1 more in the 6th giving Gull Lake the 5-2 win. Justin Mansager and Dylan Stanton both had 2 hits in the win. Cade Stanton, Kole Warren, and Jake Allen all added hits for Gull Lake. Lakeview’s Tyler Brown took the loss on the mound. Justin Ratliff, Kollin Johnson, Jacob Renkiewicz, and Tyler Brown all had hits in the loss.
Game 2: Gull Lake scored 6 runs in the top of the 2nd, and 1 insurance run in the 7th while fighting off a late rally by Lakeview to win game two. Gull Lake sent 11 batters up to the plate in the 2nd. Cade Stanton doubled to kick off the inning. Nick Fadden reached base on an error, and Jack Blesch walked to load the bases. Jacob Gleason then singled to score Stanton and Fadden, and moved Courtesy runner Tony Schnotala to third. A balk was called on Lakeview’s starting pitcher scoring Schnotala and advancing Gleason to 2nd. Gavin Griffin singled putting runners on the corners. Justin Mansager was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hunter Hazel came through again with an RBI single driving in Gleason. Dylan Stanton then hit into a fielder’s choice and then brother Cade Stanton singled driving in Mansager and Hazel giving Gull Lake a 6-0 lead. Lakeview would chip into the lead, Jalen Watkins walked and later scored on a Brendan Shepherd sacrifice fly. At the end of 2 Gull Lake 6, Lakeview 1. Lakeview would pick up 1 more in the 3rd when Tyler Brown scored on a Wild Pitch cutting the lead to 4. After shutting out Gull Lake in the top of the 4th, Lakeview’s Kosta Sevastopoulos led off the inning with a walk. Back to back singles by Jackson Kitchen and Tyler Brown loaded the bases. Shortstop Justin Ratliff then would single driving in Sevastopoulos and Kitchen cutting into Gull Lake’s lead. Tyler Brown would come around to score when Jack Goodman drew a bases loaded walk. Jack Blesch made a spectacular catch to help end the inning and Lakeview’s scoring threat. Blesch tracked down Brendan Shepherd’s foul ball to the first base side, reaching and diving over the fence. At the end of 4 Gull Lake 6, Lakeview 5. Gull Lake was able to pick up an insurance run in the top of the 7th when Cade Stanton hit a Sacrifice Fly driving in Justin Mansager who lead off the inning with a single. With the 6 spot in the 2nd inning that gave Jack Blesch enough to earn the victory on the mound. Lakeview’s Jackson Kitchen picked up the loss. Gavin Griffin pitched 2 shut out no hit innings to pick up the save for Gull Lake. The wins today move Gull Lake to 26-8 on the season.
Lakeview plays Tuesday with Mattawan to finish up a game that was previously suspended due to darkness. The game was tied 4-4. Gull Lake will travel to Edwardsburg Friday for a single game.
