Gull Lake picks up the sweep against Cross Division rival Mattawan

Gull Lake wins Game 1 8 to 5 and Game 2 7 to 0 in 5 innings.

Game 1 Gull Lake 8, Mattawan 5

Gull Lake’s Brandon Ruge had another strong performance and getting the W on the mound today going 5 ? Innings, allowing 2 runs (1 ER) on 3 hits while striking out 9 Wildcat Batters.

Gull Lake managed to score at least one run in each of the first 5 innings. Gull Lake scored 8 runs on 6 hits, leaving 8 Blue Devils on base.

Gull Lake jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after back to back hit by pitches of Justin Mansager and Jacob Louden put runners on first and second. Luke Scoles then grounded to 3rd base allowing Mansager and Louden to move up and put runners on 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out. Dylan Stanton followed that up with a 2 run double.

Gull Lake scored 1 more in the 2nd off of a Luke Scoles RBI Single. At the end of 2 Gull Lake 3, Mattawan 0.

Mattawan was able to cut into the lead in the top of the 3rd when Kyle VanLiere singled and would later come in to score on a wild pitch.

Gull Lake then scored 2 in both the bottom of the 3rd and 4th inning and 1 in the 5th to extend the lead 8-1.

Mattawan got one back in the 6th. Kyle VanLiere reached on an error, and both Joshua Swinehart and Tannar Knapp drew walks to load the bases with no outs. Kincaid Devenport hit a SAC Fly to Leftfield.

With runners on 1st and 2nd with one out, Gull Lake went to the pen for Dean Sommer to get them out of the jam. He came in and struck out the final two outs. At the end of 6, Gull Lake 8, Mattawan 2.

Mattawan made it close in the top of 7 on a 3 run jack by Kyle VanLiere. But that was as close as Sommer would let Mattawan get.

Dylan Stanton led Gull Lake with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. Dawson Clancy and Jack Blesch each picked up one hit and 2 RBI’s. John Stage picked up his first Varsity hit in the win.

For Mattawan, Connor Schuman, and Kyle VanLiere picked up 2 hits in the loss for Mattawan.

 

Game 2 Gull Lake 7, Mattawan 0 in 5 innings.

Gull Lake wasted no time getting on the board in the 1st inning when Dylan Stanton singled to score leadoff hitter Justin Mansager who led off the inning with a walk.

Gull Lake used a great 2 out rally to score 4 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. After the first two Gull Lake batters struck out, Brandon Ruge reached on base on an error. Hunter Hazel walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Justin Mansager and Jacob Louden would both single to drive in a run apiece. Luke Scoles would then triple to plate Louden. At the end of 2, Gull Lake 5, Mattawan 0.

Gull Lake would get two more in the 3rd after a Brandon Ruge singled to drive in two runs. Gull Lake’s Nick Fadden barely missed going yard by a few feet, settling with a Ground Rule Double. At the end of 3, Gull Lake 7, Mattawan 0.

Luke Mastromattieo got the win on the bump for Gull Lake, throwing a 3 hit shutout in 5 innings. Mastromattieo struck out 6 along the way. Carson Byers was handed the loss for Mattawan.

The game was called due to darkness. Since it reached the 5th inning the game became official.

Mattawan heads to Grand Ledge on Saturday, while Gull Lake will be on the road at Byron Center on Saturday.
