Boys Varsity Baseball splits with Lakeshore

Gull Lake’s late rally comes up short game 1 losing 8-5, Fends off comeback to win game 2 11-9.

Game 1: Lakeshore scored 2 runs in their first 4 innings and took advantage of 5 Gull Lake errors, jumping out to a 8-1 lead. Gull Lake kicked off the scoring in the top of the first, Justin Mansager led off the game with a double, Dylan Stanton walked and Kole Warren reached base on an error to load the bases. Gull Lake’s Gavin Griffin singled to drive in Mansager to give Gull Lake a 1-0 lead. Lakeshore’s Trey Thibeault singled to lead off the bottom of the 1st. Thibeault then stole 2nd and scored when Connor Brawley reached on an error. Jared Evens walked and later scored on an RBI groundout by Cam Dairymple. Lakeshore picked up 2 more in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th. Trey Thibeault and Logan Morrow both had 2 hits in the win. Joel Brawley went 3 strong innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits. Gull Lake rallied late but came up empty. They scored 2 in the 5th on a 2 RBI single by Gavin Griffin, cutting the lead 8-3. A RBI Sacrifice Fly by Kole Warren in the 6th scored courtesy runner Tony Schnotala making it an 8-4 deficit. Jacob Allen drove in Gavin Griffin for Gull Lake’s final run. Final Score 8-5. At the plate Gull Lake was led by Justin Mansager, Gavin Griffin, and Hunter Hazel who all had 2 hits. Griffin drove in 3 runs. Avery Eastman picked up the loss on the mound.  

Game 2 Lakeshore jumped out to a 2-0 lead on base hits by Trey Thibeault, Connor Brawley, and Oli Carmody. Lakeshore scored 2 more times in the bottom of the 3rd on a Sacrifice Fly, and a RBI single by Cam Dairympie. Gull Lake steamed back in the 4th scoring 7 runs after sending 12 batters to the plate. Cade Stanton led off the inning with a solo home run. Kole Warren was hit by a pitch and singles by Jacob Allen and Jack Blesch loaded the bases. Jacob Gleason hit into a fielder’s choice driving in Warren. Justin Mansager followed that up with an RBI single up the middle driving in Allen. Luke Scoles walked to load the bases. Dylan Stanton was then hit by a pitch driving in a run. Scoles and Mansager scored on an error on 3rd baseman that was hit by Cade Stanton. Dylan Stanton scored on a RBI Sacrifice Fly by Kole Warren, giving Gull Lake a 7-4 lead. Gull Lake picked up 3 more in the 5th by an RBI single by Justin Mansager and a 2 RBI single by Luke Scoles. Lakeshore wasn’t going without a fight, they scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th cutting the lead to 10-9. Trey Thibeault had an RBI single, and Connor Brawley drove in 2 runs with a triple to right field. Gull Lake was able to pick up an insurance run in the top of the 7th when Luke Scoles hit into a fielder’s choice that drove in pinch runner Hunter Hazel. Hazel was running for Jack Blesch who led off the inning with a single. With a 2 run lead Gavin Griffin came in to pitch the 7th and got the Save, he was able to get Jared Evans, Oli Carmody, and Cam Dairymple to fly out to end the game. Justin Mansager did a tremendous job patrolling the outfield making several outstanding plays for Gull Lake. Luke Mastromatteo got the win on the hill for Gull Lake going 5 and ?’s giving up 6 runs on 7 hits striking out 1. Kyle Wojahn was handed the loss.

Lakeshore will host their Annual Tournament on Saturday, and Gull Lake will host Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Monday.
