Gull Lake Baseball goes 1-1 at the Byron Center Tournament

Gull Lake wins Game 1 13-4 versus Northview loses Game 2 12-2 to host Byron Center  

Game 1 Gull Lake sent 12 batters to the plate in the 7th to score 7 runs to pull away from Northview. Northview kicked off the contest with a run in the 1st when Kennedy Smith scored on a wild pitch strike 3 on Alex Christian who made it all the way to 2nd on the play. Gull Lake roared back to take the lead in the top of the 2nd when Kole Warren, Luke Scoles, and Nick Fadden all singled to load the bases. Catcher Hunter Hazel grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Warren. On the next pitch Justin Mansager singled up the middle scoring Scoles giving Gull Lake the 2-1 lead. Northview battled back and scored two runs in the bottom of the 3rd after an RBI single by Alex Christian and an error, Northview 3, Gull Lake 2. The score stayed the same until the top of the 5th when Gull Lake Hunter Hazel reached on a hit by pitch, Justin Mansager singled and Jacob Gleason walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored courtesy runner Tony Schnotala and allowed Mansager and Gleason to advance to 2nd and 3rd. A Dylan Stanton single brought in both Mansager and Gleason to give Gull Lake a 5-3 lead. That is all the runs starting pitcher Avery Eastman needed to get the win. Eastman settled in and threw 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 2 hits, striking out 5.  Northview’s Dan Frey picked up the loss. Hunter Hazel had a big day at the plate going 1 for 3 collecting 3 RBI’s. Justin Mansager and Dylan Stanton both drove in 2 runs while collecting 2 hits. Cade Stanton and Gavin Griffin also added 2 hits in the win. Northview was led by Alex Christian who had two out of the 3 Wildcats hits. Riley Pitchure had the other.

Game 2 Host Byron Center took advantage of some clutch hitting, superb defense and miscues to beat Gull Lake 12-2 in 6 innings. Byron Center’s Anthony Rainko was a home run shy from hitting for the cycle. He went 3-4 with a single, double and a triple while driving in a run. Jason Purlee added 3 hits as well driving in 2. Cam Schuelke also drove in 2 Bulldogs in the win. Starting pitcher Nate Myers behind a great defense picked up the win for Byron Center. He went 5 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 3. Gull Lake’s Luke Mastromatteo was tagged with the loss. Gavin Griffin had 2 hits and an RBI in the loss for Gull Lake.

Gull Lake travels to Vicksburg on Monday to play the Bulldogs. Game time 4:30.
